Waste to energy or better yet incineration 🔥 is Waste to energy or better yet incineration 🔥 is a dying 😵 industry. The facilities themselves have a very short life span. On top of that, the more people realize that burning trash is not good for the environment, the less they are willing to put up with it in their communities. Chester is no different. The people of Chester and the surrounding areas in Delco have a right to clean air. But the only way we can truly close the incinerator is with your help.
Will you help in the fight 🥊 against Covanta?

Chester officials need to wake up and face facts. Chester officials need to wake up and face facts. Covanta is a horrible community partner that drains Chester of its resources. So, how again are they good community partners?⠀

There are some serious red flags in Covanta's description of their business. These are some of the lies and misinformation that Covanta continues to spread in order to keep operating. To them, their profits are worth more than our lives. No matter what kind of public relations campaign they try to run, the fact of the matter is that they are burning trash. Burning trash in any way, shape, or form is bad for the environment and even worse for the inhabitants who have to breathe it in. We have been repeatedly lied to and dismissed as if our right to breathe is negotiable.
There's another chance for you to speak out against the renewing of Covanta's 3 YEAR contract. On Tuesday, March 29th at 7:00 PM there will be a Delco Solid Waste Authority meeting, this would be a great time to voice your opinion against Covanta!

Yesterday CRCQL and allies held a powerful press c Yesterday CRCQL and allies held a powerful press conference and action outside of Delaware County Council meeting, with nearly 70 people in attendance. Thank you to everyone who came out to support!!
We called on Council’s leadership role to not allow the Delco Solid Waste Authority (DCSWA) to engage in a new 3-year contract with Covanta. Council needs to provide the financial backing for DCSWA to move away from burning the county's waste in Chester and pave the road for Zero Waste!
There were several speakers followed by a die-in/sit-in and moment of silence for all those victimized by the historic pollution and environmental racism in Chester City and beyond.
Special thanks to our C-4 students @swarthmore.c4 who really stepped up and supported this action!!

END DELCO’S INCINERATION ADDICTION PRESS CONFER END DELCO’S INCINERATION ADDICTION
PRESS CONFERENCE @ DELAWARE COUNTY COUNCIL
Hosted by Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL or “circle”)
WHAT:
CRCQL members, Chester residents, and Delaware County allies are gathering for a press conference outside of County Council to shine light on Council’s leadership role and call on their ability to instruct the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority (DCSWA) to not engage in a new 3-year contract with Covanta for the county’s waste. Additionally, CRCQL calls on Council to instruct DCSWA not to squander our precious county’s landfill space by giving Covanta the right to fill it up with the 450,000 tons/year of incinerator ash (largely from NYC, Philly and other states trash). Council needs to support DCSWA in breaking their addiction to filling the landfill with out-of-county waste and prepare the county for a Zero Waste path.
The press conference will be followed by a die-in demonstration to emphasize the historical toxic pollution of the Chester community by the largest trash incinerator in the country and forms of environmental racism that have burdened the city for decades.
WHEN:
Wednesday, March 16, 2022
Meet at 5 (press conference begins at 5:15pm)
WHERE:
Meet outside of Government Center Building at Delaware County Courthouse
201 W. Front Street Media, PA 19063
(Transportation will be provided for Chester residents)
WHO:
Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL) along with residents of Chester City and Delaware County, and other supporting organizations.
WHY
Trash from Delaware County, Philly, NYC, NJ and Ocean City, MD and beyond is sent to be burned at the Covanta trash incinerator in Chester, the largest in the nation and the biggest air polluter in the city. Since 1992, the Covanta incinerator has been emitting pollutants which contribute to asthma, cancer, strokes, and other health issues.

Residents from across Delaware County joined the D Residents from across Delaware County joined the Delco Solid Waste Authority (DCSWA) Board meeting on Wednesday, March 9th to hear more about the Board’s review of a new Covanta contract for Delaware County waste. Objections were made by CRCQL for the proposed terms.
Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL) has been fighting for clean air in Chester, PA and Delco County for decades. With the Covanta trash incinerator — the largest incinerator in the nation – burning trash daily right in Chester, it’s the source for a big portion of the air pollution in Chester and beyond. CRCQL has been pushing Delaware County to reconsider how it processes its waste, since sending the county’s trash to its largest community of color to be burned is an act of environmental racism.
Despite the fact that the County has hired Zero Waste Consultants to re-evaluate their waste practices, the Solid Waste Authority Board scheduled a review of the Covanta waste contract for their March 9 meeting. Chester residents and CRCQL allies from across the county joined the Solid Waste Authority Board meeting with signs to protest any renewal or continuation of the Covanta contract.
Dozens of attendees filled the Board room and gathered outside the Hunt Club Building to eagerly hear the Solid Waste Authority Board’s meeting and discussion of the Covanta contract. Signs reading “Ban the Burn,” “No Ash for Cash,” and “No Covanta Contract” filled the room. Chester residents, Delaware County allies, and students from C4 – Campus Coalition Concerning Chester – peacefully attended the Solid Waste Authority Board meeting to provide comments and listen in on the deliberations.
The SWA Board stated they are still in negotiations with Covanta and no real details were given on the contract beyond a proposal of 3-years. The current contract expires April 30th.
Additionally, CRCQL objects to the continued use of the County-owned landfill for the incinerator’s toxic ash, which is largely made up of trash from New York and Philadelphia, resulting in increased costs for Delaware County residents.
Have you seen these signs while driving in Chester Have you seen these signs while driving in Chester? This is how you know Covanta sees our movement as a threat. All the marketing and PR stunts in the world will never convince us that they are a "good community partner". How can you pollute the air in Delco and consider yourself a community partner? It sounds like they are trying to convince themselves because no in Delco, especially Chester believes this for a second.
On March 16th, at 5:00 pm there will be a press conference in Media, PA, so stay tuned for more details! Also sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on all of our latest actions! (Link in bio!)

Composting is one of the best ways everyday consum Composting is one of the best ways everyday consumers can help to reduce waste. Composting keeps waste to a minimum which ultimately helps marginalized communities like Chester, but also helps the planet. While we are fighting to end trash incineration (aka waste to energy) we also recognize that using the alternative-landfills, isn’t the best option either. However, we can control how much ends up there. Through efforts such as composting and recycling serious waste reduction can be a reality.
More communities are adopting composting services such as Bennet Compost in Philadelphia. These true “green companies” have become a valuable asset in helping communities make the transition to zero waste. With more Delco communities going zero waste don’t be surprised to see more composting companies soon.

Environmental Racism

Chester, Pennsylvania has long been known as one of the nation’s worst cases of environmental racism. This small city just southwest of Philadelphia hosts the nation’s largest trash incinerator, a sewage sludge incinerator, a paper mill burning waste coal and petroleum coke, numerous chemical plants, toxic waste sites, and much more. Immediately surrounding it in the neighboring waterfront boroughs of Eddystone, Trainer, and Marcus Hook are additional major polluters: primarily oil refineries and gas-fired power plants
