🌇Chester, PA is completely bombarded with toxic 🌇Chester, PA is completely bombarded with toxic industries trying to move in. But that’s ok because we have fought them before and we will fight them again. Here are some of the companies on our shit list.
🗑🔥Covanta-This company is responsible for burning imported trash in Chester. In fact, the incinerator in Chester is the largest in the country. The burning of trash has been linked to giving people cancer, asthma, and other life threatening conditions, while also contributing negatively to climate change.
💩🚽DELCORA-This company processes sewage in Chester and is trying to bring more shit into Chester. As if Chester residents don’t have enough problems.
💦🎣 Aqua-This company is trying to buy and privatize Chester Waste Authority. This means higher prices for rate payers. Also privatizing water can be disastrous if left in the hands of people who only care about profit. Be sure to follow @SaveCWA for more on how to help stop the privatization of CWA.
⛽️💥Penn America-This is our newest threat but the most life threatening, while the other companies listed kills Chester residents slowly this can kill in one cataclysmic event. Penn America is a company that want to make liquified natural gas (LNG) in Chester. THEY WANT TO MAKE GASOLINE IN CHESTER! Gas is extremely volatile and it’s not a matter of if it’ll explode, it’s a matter of when.
All of this is the result of elected official pimping out Chester’s resources. You can help us stop these entities from taking over and poisoning our environment. If you’re a Delco resident call your local official and demand to know what they are doing to prevent these companies from polluting our environment.

🏭🏭🏭 The city of Chester houses many toxic 🏭🏭🏭 The city of Chester houses many toxic industries, but the dirtiest one by far is Covanta. This company imports trash from Philly, NYC, and Maryland. The burning 🔥 of this imported trash 🗑 causes pollutants and particulate matter to be dispersed in the air. These things cause cancer, asthma, and other life threatening conditions. That is why we are fighting like hell to shut Covanta down.
Follow us at @chester_ej and join the fight!
🗑🗑🗑 If you live in Delco, Philly 🔔, or 🗑🗑🗑 If you live in Delco, Philly 🔔, or New York City 🗽 this is what happens to your trash. It gets shipped to Chester either by truck or train and gets burned. This then turns into toxic ash and particulate matter. The particulate matter we end up breathing into our lungs and the toxic ash goes on to pollute our soil.

The Climate Justice Initiative uses the power of p The Climate Justice Initiative uses the power of public art to tell stories about the causes, effects, and solutions to the climate crisis in Lenapehoking (the greater Philadelphia region). We are a collaboration between front-line organizers, activists, and artists, convened by the Environmental Justice Department of Mural Arts Philadelphia.
A key part of the climate Justice initiative includes Creative Disruptions that use the power of public art to intervene directly in local climate injustices, supporting the priorities of collaborating organizations and amplifying their messages.
The artists will create a small scale creative disruption, a highly-visible, action that disrupts the status quo and advances campaign objectives of participant organization: Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL), an environmental justice community organization based in Chester, PA fighting to end trash incineration in their community.

Youth learned about the environment, and planted different flowers and vegetables to take home. We also visited a local vegetable garden and got to see how food is grown. We also discussed what environment means to them over water ice and soft pretzels.
It was such a great day and way to engage the community on a hot Sunday!! Thank you to all the students who worked to put this event together!

This audio is from our chairperson Zulene speaking This audio is from our chairperson Zulene speaking at a Delco public hearing that was held last year. Her words are powerful.
She is our motivating force behind this movement. Although we have a lot of moving parts in our organization, she inspires us to fight and reminds us that our environment is worth fighting for. Under her leadership, CRCQL has shut down more than one polluter in Chester, and we will continue to do so.

Many people turn a blind eye to the condition of Many people turn a blind eye to the condition of their environment because it is convenient to do so. But not for Chester residents. We see it, breathe it, and live in the toxicity of the industries operating here. Although we live in a city we have the right to live in a toxic free environment.

Funny, but not funny. Why would they even propose Funny, but not funny. Why would they even propose putting a liquified natural gas plant in Chester, when we already have an incinerator, sewage treatment facility, and numerous chemical plants here already?
Comment below if you think Chester deserves better than this!
We want everyone to get used to hearing the term L We want everyone to get used to hearing the term LNG and to know what it stands for-liquified natural gas. Yes, the incredibly volatile substance known to cause huge explosions. They are trying to bring a LNG plant to Chester. Yes! They want to manufacture gas here!
Between the incinerator and the sewage facility doesn’t Chester have enough toxic industries?
Chester residents let your voice be heard. Let Chester City Council know that we don’t need another toxic industry.

Our city council should be safe guarding us from these toxic industries who put profits over people, however we recently found out through the Philadelphia Inquire that this proposed LNG site has been in talks for years. Some of Chester city council (and of course the mayor) has been entertaining this idea for years. We need to stand up to city council and let them know we do not need this plant on our city.

🚩🚩🚩There are some serious red flags in Co 🚩🚩🚩There are some serious red flags in Covanta's description of their business. These are some of the lies and misinformation that Covanta continues to spread in order to keep operating. To them, their profits are worth more than our lives. No matter what kind of public relations campaign they try to run, the fact of the matter is that they are burning trash. Burning trash in any way, shape, or form is bad for the environment and even worse for the inhabitants who have to breathe it in. We have been repeatedly lied to and dismissed as if our right to breathe is negotiable.
We encourage everyone who is interested in helping us fight for environmental justice to join our bi-weekly zoom meeting this Thursday at 7:00pm (link available in bio)
Help Shape Delaware County’s Path Toward Zero Wa Help Shape Delaware County’s Path Toward Zero Waste! ZERO WASTE WORKSHOP on Thursday 6/30 at 6 PM Chester City Hall Community Room.
Delaware County has launched a series of public workshops to gather community feedback as part of an effort to update the County’s 10-year Municipal Waste Management Plan, last updated in 2013. The plan will ensure that the County has sufficient processing and disposal capacity for its municipal waste for the next decade and will guide the County’s transition to sustainable methods of materials management using Zero Waste practices. The final workshop of the series will be held on Thursday, June 30th at the Chester City Hall Community Room. Participants will review the elements of the plan and provide guidance to the implementation and funding strategies.
Guest speaker, Marvin Hayes, program manager of the Baltimore Compost Collective will talk about the work of the collective which provides life skills mentorship and first-time employment for area youth. The Compost Collective collects food scraps from local customers and creates compost for the Filbert Street Community Garden, the largest community garden in Baltimore. Marvin Hayes is passionate about his work training the next generation to become environmental champions, helping their community to get closer to zero waste. “’Compost: Learn, so we don’t have to burn,’ that’s our motto,” Hayes says.
The workshop will include an open house and discussion of draft elements of the Zero Waste Plan. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited and registration is required.
To help ensure that the new plan continues to take shape reflective of the priorities of the residents, businesses and institutions within Delaware County, the public is strongly encouraged to participate. The June 30th workshop will be held both in-person and via Zoom. Participation in the prior workshops is not a prerequisite for participation the final workshop, and fresh voices are welcome.
Pre-registration is a requirement for participation (either in-person or via Zoom) in the workshop. For additional details and to register, visit delcopa.gov/workshops.

Environmental Racism

Chester, Pennsylvania has long been known as one of the nation’s worst cases of environmental racism. This small city just southwest of Philadelphia hosts the nation’s largest trash incinerator, a sewage sludge incinerator, a paper mill burning waste coal and petroleum coke, numerous chemical plants, toxic waste sites, and much more. Immediately surrounding it in the neighboring waterfront boroughs of Eddystone, Trainer, and Marcus Hook are additional major polluters: primarily oil refineries and gas-fired power plants
